A varied well-coached programme of sport is an integral element of a Hutchesons’ education. All pupils enjoy physical education as part of the curriculum under the leadership of outstanding sportsmen and women, some of whom are internationalists and Olympians themselves.
A varied programme of physical education and sport is a key feature of a Hutchesons’ education. PE is taught by highly qualified specialist teachers, including ex-international athletes and Olympians and pupils use the first-rate facilities at Beaton Road and at our Pollok Park campus which has 4 rugby pitches, a large indoor gym hall, dance studio, climbing wall, outdoor MUGA and changing facilities
Pupils in P1-P3 have three periods of PE each week, either in the gym for dance and gymnastics or in the main hall where the focus is on games and the development of spatial awareness and hand-eye co-ordination. P4-P5 pupils have four periods of PE each week. This comprises a double period of gymnastics or ball skills and a double period of games. Both year groups are also timetabled for swimming on a rota basis. In Primary 6 and 7 the pupils have five periods of PE. This time is spent on sports traditional to Hutchesons’ including hockey, rugby, cricket and tennis. They also enjoy ball games such as basketball and netball.
Team spirit is alive and well at Hutchesons’s with rugby teams and hockey teams playing every Saturday in matches against other schools throughout Scotland. Athletics and cross-country running have been particular strengths in recent years across all age groups, with Hutchesons’ boys and girls dominating national competitions.
Pupils can also enjoy a wide range of activities including cricket, football, netball, athletics, rowing, tennis, golf and cross-country. Curling, volleyball, badminton, aerobics and rock climbing are other alternatives. In the last year our pupils have represented Scotland in hockey, rowing, athletics, squash and karate.
The excellent facilities at the secondary school include the indoor sports complex at Beaton Road which houses two multi-purpose gym halls, a cardio gym and a strength and conditioning suite. There is also an Olympic standard running track and an outdoor multi-use games area. There is an additional large gym hall, dance studio, climbing wall, astro-turf hockey pitch and four grass rugby pitches at our Hutchesons’ at Pollok Park campus. Our pupils also have the use of the adjacent Clydesdale Cricket Club and the courts at Titwood Tennis club.
Many of our pupils excel in sport and represent Scotland and the UK in high profile competitions.
We support our pupils to compete at national level. A dedicated Athletics Development Coach can create bespoke strength and conditioning workout programmes.
In recent years our pupils have represented Scotland in Hockey, Netball, Table Tennis, Cricket, Athletics and Squash,
