Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at Glasgow Cathedral

On the evening of Wednesday, 18th December, we were delighted to hold our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the wonderful Glasgow Cathedral.

Led by the Senior Choir boasting 100 performers, the audience was treated to a traditional service of lessons and carols.

Not only did the choir sing beautifully, but they were ably supported by the 50-strong Junior Chorus of pupils from Primary 4-7, the Hutchie Fellas, The Upper Voices, Hutchesons’ Choral Society and Former Pupils and Staff. Combined with the Pipe Band playing the audience in before the service, we had over 200 performers with a sold-out Cathedral audience joining in with the congregational carols.

Mr Tim Rhodes, Director of Performing Arts, commented, “Singing challenging, traditional carols is not an easy feat, and many of the pieces were either unaccompanied, in 4-part harmony, involving soloists, and a combination of all of this! Particular mention must go to all those who read a lesson and to Gregor (S1), Lara (S6) and Andrew (FP) who sang solos. Thank you to the staff who led and supported the five choirs involved and to Revd Mark Johnstone and all at Glasgow Cathedral for allowing us the opportunity to hold our Carol Service in such an iconic, beautiful venue.”

Thank you to all those who attended, watched online, and donated to the shared charities which were Glasgow Cathedral Restoration Fund and the school charity Merry Go Round.

It was a beautifully fitting way to bring a close to a hugely positive and successful term at Hutchie.
